Processing Change in the Right Environment

Luke Kuepfer • Sep 14, 2023

Leaders should also consider the medium and location when introducing change. A face-to-face meeting conveys much more empathy than a written memo can. Holding strategic meetings regarding difficult upcoming changes may be best held at a beautiful resort instead of in a stuffy boardroom. Simply re-situating the context helps us accomplish these tasks in more enjoyable ways since we are building in natural rewards for our efforts.

When running a non-profit in Southeast Asia, our staff especially enjoyed taking retreats up in the mountains or at beautiful resorts. We combined recreation and rest with our leadership and brainstorming meetings. A change in context gave us new energy to process change. In one sense it also helped us get above the situation and able to process it from more angles and objectivity.
