Amateur or Professional, Part 10: Sharing Knowledge
Based on an article published by Shane Parrish titled, "The Difference Between Amateurs and Professionals,” I'm reflecting on some of his key points with today's discussion on:
“Amateurs think knowledge is power. Professionals pass on wisdom and advice."
Just like a coach pours into her team the knowledge they need to successfully win, professionals empower their people with knowledge, wisdom, and advice. On the other hand, amateurs hold on to their knowledge, believing they can maintain power over their people. While one can maintain some semblance of power by keeping certain facts under lock and key, several problems arise:
- We're living in a “knowledge economy” today in which human capital and intellectual property are the main drivers. By not sharing your knowledge and collaborating with your people, you'll stifle forward movement and innovation.
- Given the high demand for labor, employees are changing jobs often, seeking better environments and wages. They want transparency from their superiors and will quickly jump ship if they perceive you are hiding something.
Two things to understand about knowledge. People need both data and insight. They need to know what is important and then how to apply it.
The best leaders curate the best data out there and provide it to their people to make better decisions. They also help their people connect the dots and understand the data. Finally, they do it on time making sure their people remain relevant and up to speed.
So engage your people with your knowledge and build trust in the process. Be a professional. Share your power and empower your people.
